法新社報導，反移民色彩鮮明的參議員塞申斯（Jeff Sessions）是競選期間最早表態支持川普者之一。他獲提名出任司法部長，顯示川普上任後已準備對非法移民落實強硬立場。
已是20年國會老將的塞申斯說：「我熱烈擁護總統當選人川普『團結美國』的觀點，以及他所提在法律上實現平等正義的允諾。」
川普則於聲明裡形容塞申斯「有著世界級的司法頭腦」。
但塞申斯於1980年代部分言論，將會是他擔任司法部長的包袱。早在1986年，塞申斯就說過白人律師幫黑人辯護「是白人之恥」這種話；另有報導指塞申斯曾開玩笑說：「我覺得3K黨分子很OK，除非我發現他們抽大麻。」
塞申斯於2007和2013年，對國會致力通過廣泛的移民改革政策開戰，也可從此看出他對移民激烈的反對立場。
